【概要】
In the past twenty years, there has been a tremendous increase in the demand for energy by countries in the East and Southern African regions, due to increasing populations and expanding economies. Provision of energy to meet the demand has been a challenge of many countries because of limited financial resources to fund the required services. The region has abundance of conventional and renewable energy sources that can be exploited to increase the availability of energy. There are also possibilities of sharing energy resources across the borders, through interconnected systems.

日本から遠く遠く離れた南アフリカからの招待講演者の話に、学生らも皆大変興味深げに聴き入っていた。経済成長が目覚ましく、それにより電力需要が激増している南アフリカの現状と今後の計画について話をして頂いた。講演後、学生たちから下記のような質問が出て、講師と学生の間で議論が行われた。
１．原子力発電の増設の可能性について
２．他国からの技術的・経済的支援について
３．アフリカ地域における大規模送電線網の構築について
