In recent years, HVDC transmission lines have been developed rapidly. However, comparing to the power equipment for high voltage alternating current (HVAC) transmission, there are still many problems in the design and maintenance of insulation of HVDC power equipment. This lecture introduces our efforts to understand some of the fundamentals in HVDC insulation. Firstly, space charge behavior and its effect on field distortion is the key problem for HVDC insulation design. Traditional pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) system was modified to measure space charge profile in the conditions with temperature gradient and with an interface between oil and oil-immersed paper. Secondly, aiming to calculate the field distribution more exactly, the numerical simulation model for charge transportation was adopted, and a method was proposed to determine some of the key parameters (i.e. the mobility of negative and positive charges). Moreover, some specific characteristics of aging and lifetime under DC voltage were observed, indicating the necessity of future works to develop specific maintenance tools for HVDC insulation.
