■概要:About 60% of the energy produced in the world is lost mostly as waste heat. Thermoelectric materials have excellent functions to convert the heat energy to the electrical energy and vice versa. Thermoelectrics is expected to play an important role in meeting the energy challenge of the future. The efficiency of the conversion depends on the dimensionless thermoelectric (TE) figure of merit zT, defined as S2σT/κ, where S is the Seebeck coefficient, σ the electrical conductivity, and κ the thermal conductivity. The increase of zT leads to improved efficiency in TE conversion. Since zT depends on materials, we can expect an increasing emphasis on the development of advanced thermoelectric materials. In this talk, recent research activities to develop advanced thermoelectric materials with high zT will also be introduced.
