 The Matrix converter is an alternative power converter topology to the industry standard voltage source inverter utilising a matrix of bi-directional switches to directly connect the supply to a load. Many advantages exist for the matrix converter such as, high power density, no DC link capacitors or inductors, controllable power factor and a typical use for this type of converter would be in an industrial motor drive although they are notoriously difficult to implement.
 This lecture will give an initial outline of the matrix converter topology and go into detail regarding the issues concerning the construction and practical implementation of this class of power converter. Particular attention will be given to the power circuit implementation; power plane design and input filter implementation and controller issues. Significant emphasis will be given to practical implementation examples ranging from a few kW to several hundred kW together with industrial application examples where this converter has a major advantage over voltage source alternatives.
